Speech Title: Research of High Performance Polymer Mortar Materials with Silane

Abstract: Silane additives were used in mortar in varying proportions, and the effect of the silane content on basic properties, the mortar’s corrosion cracking resistance and durability properties was studied. Compared with the plain mortar, mortar samples with silanes exhibited better performance when subjected to freezing-thawing cycles and chemical and carbonation corrosion. The addition of silanes also results in the formation of chemical bonding across the interface, which is helpful for\improving crack resistance. Additionally, mortar samples with silanes. For mortar samples with silanes, the effect of the types and quantity of silanes on the crack resistance of mortar and carbonation corrosion is not obvious. Scanning electron microscopy images show that silanes perform the networking and “coupling” effect to hold mortar particles, resulting in the improvement of mortar durability.

Speech Title: Sustainability of Slope Stabilization Techniques in Malaysia

Abstract: The monsoon season for the few years has an impact to Malaysia tremendously and in the recent events in recent years has affected the land in devastated conditions where, hill slope landslide, erosion and flood took place around Malaysian states. This has affected many areas which are affected close proximity to hillside area due to heavy rainfall and stormy weather. This was due to monsoon season and climate change conditions, however these occurrences were not normal which has accounted many slope failure, building construction collapse and riverbank collapse. A case study a series of failure occurred at the surrounding slope in Penang and other states has occurred over the past 10 years and therefore remedial work were carry out to improve the slope on site. During the seasonal rainfalls the slope was heavily eroded and all the trees and grouted slope which was in placed before, fail to sustain from the water movement. Then a site assessment were done with a series of Soil Resistivity test on site were then explored to foresee the major problems and to counter the stability. By doing this investigation, the purpose is to understand, analyse and rectify the situation of slope failure. From this study, we have conducted the soil mapping of the ground to further understand the soil condition so that all the counter measures can be done effectively. The rectified was done as an emergency condition and was prepared immediately; therefore, soil nailing and grouting method were proposed along with different counter measure to stabilized the slope. The stabilization of the slope or riverbanks was done under three weeks and the monitoring was done to measure the ground water level conditions and inclination of ground movement after constructions. From the study it shows that after rectification and placing the right infrastructure to the slope, the system in place are now stabilized and able to cater heavy downpour after completion.

Speech Title: Photosynthetic Physiology Characteristics of Potato (Solanum Tuberosum) at Tuber Initiation Responses to Water Deficit Regulated with Mulched Drip Irrigation

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of water deficit regulated with mulched drip irrigation on photosynthetic physiology characteristics at potato tuber initiation in an arid environment. The results indicated that potato leaf photosynthetic rate (PR), transpiration rate (TR) and stomatal conductance (SC) at tuber initiation were greatly affected by water deficit regulated with mulched drip irrigation. Daily PR varied with a double-peak curve within a day at tuber initiation. The TR increased sharply after 7:00 and the maximum was marked at 13:00 in all the treatments and CK at tuber initiation, then started to decrease, and TR also decreased with soil water deficit level increase, so was SC performance. Significant positive relations (p<0.01, r=0.310**) was found between leaf water use efficiency (WUE) and PR at potato tuber initiation, but significant negative relation between WUE and TR (p<0.01, r=-0.534**) and that between WUE and SC (p<0.01, r=-0.527**) also occurred. Therefore, proper levels of water deficit regulated with mulched drip irrigation could be used to effectively regulate crop photosynthetic physiology characteristics at potato tuber initiation in an arid environment.
